A child of a parent who is active duty or retired military is eligible for an automatic Presidential Nomination to Usma, Usna or Usafa. Only 100 Appointments a year per academy are available to candidates with Presidential Nominations in the round of competition within Nominating Sources.
See page 22 of the 2009-2010 Usna Catalog:

Candidates with Presidential Nominations can be offered Loa’s(letter of assurance) and Appointed or can be selected off the waitlist without regard to the 100 Appointment limit. Competition among waitlisted candidates is National and strictly according to whole person scores.

Children of MOH winners are eligible for an Appointment on a non competitive basis if found to be triple qualified-scholastically, medically, physically.

Good Luck!
It’s not automatic, but it can’t hurt.
Now, if your mother somehow manages to get a Medal Of Honor, then you’d be automatically eligible. However, given what it takes to get that award, she may not be around to see you go.
No dice. It helps but it’s based on qualifications and the test. Having your parent winning the Medal of Honor is about the only guarantee that I know of and that is only if you qualify.
Both Patton and MacArthur had to study at other military academies while waiting for their appointments into West Point. Patton waited two years and MacArthur waited one year. Plus MacArthur’s Father won the Medal of Honor. Being an Eagle Scout also helps too.
There are no guarantees or promises. Test, have a good grade track record in school with a lot of community service oriented achievements, being active in your varsity sports and meet and write your Congressmen to get an appointment with your state Senator. From what I understand, each state may only recommend two for appointment into the academy.
Good luck!
nope. the only children of dependents thare automatically granted admission are those of MoH winners. everybody else has to get in on their own merits.
One note to clear up some of the other answers: if you are teh child of a MoH winner, you do not recieve an automatic entry into a Service Academy. You just get an automatic nomination, you still have to meet the academic and physical qualifications for entry.
The only other special category for dependants is if your parent is an O6 (COL / CAPT) or above, then there are some special administrative monitoring that is done.
